Kusasotetu - Kusasotetu

Japanese:
Kusasotetu - Kusasotetu

A summer-green fern of the Dryopteris family. It is also known as Gansoku and Kogomi. Its leaves grow in bundles from a short, upright rhizome. There are two types of leaves: vegetative and sporophyll. The vegetative leaves are 1 meter tall, oblanceolate, and wider at the top. They are twice pinnately divided, and are a thin, bright green herbaceous substance. The pinnae are narrowly lanceolate and deeply pinnately lobed, and the lower pinnae are reduced to ear-like shapes. The sporophyll is shorter than the vegetative leaves, and is 60 centimeters tall. The pinnae are linear, shallowly lobed, and roll up on the underside to encase the sporangia. The kusa-cycad grows underground from the rhizome, and new shoots emerge from the tips of these branches, so it usually grows in colonies and is found in forests throughout Japan. The name comes from the leaf shape, which resembles that of a cycad. Young leaves are boiled, boiled, or pickled. Another name, Kogominomi, means edible, and Gansoku comes from the fact that the base of the petiole grows in a bundle, resembling the legs of a goose.
