Japanese: 安藤太郎 - あんどう・たろう
Taro Ando
Year of death: October 27, 1924
Year of birth: 8th April 1846 (3rd May 1846)
A Meiji-era diplomat and temperance activist. His pen name was Tadatsune. His father, Ando Bunzawa, was from what is now Moroyama, Saitama Prefecture, and was a doctor for the Toba Domain and a pioneer in vaccination, while his mother was Matsu. Taro studied Chinese classics under Yasui Sokken, Dutch studies under Tsuboi Hoshu, and English studies under Mitsukuri Akitsubyo, and entered the Naval Training School and Army Training School, becoming a cavalryman for the Edo Shogunate. He joined Enomoto's army during the Boshin War, disembarking at Goryokaku and serving a year in prison. He served in the Ministry of Finance, then transferred to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, where he accompanied the Iwakura Mission as a fourth-class secretary. He served as vice-consul in Hong Kong and consul-general in Shanghai, before being baptized while serving as consul-general in Hawaii. He instituted a prohibition movement after Enomoto's wife Fumiko (sister of Arai Ikunosuke) had a groom break a barrel of sake sent by Minister of Communications Takeaki Enomoto. He was the first head of the Immigration Division in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. He resigned as Director of the Commerce and Industry Bureau of the Ministry of Agriculture and Commerce, and thereafter devoted himself to Christian missionary work and the activities of the Japan Temperance Union.
