Tanaka's snailfish

Japanese: クサウオ - くさうお(英語表記)Tanaka's snailfish
Tanaka's snailfish

A marine fish belonging to the order Scorpaeniformes and family Langsauridae. It is found around Japan from central Kyushu northward, in the East China Sea, the Yellow Sea, and the Bohai Sea. Its body is soft and its skin is puffy. Its head is vertically flattened, wide, and slightly pointed. Its body is slender and laterally flattened. It has two nostrils on each side, the anterior nostrils opening at the tip of the tube. Its gill slits are large and reach the base of the 11th soft ray of the pectoral fin. About half of the caudal fin is connected to the dorsal and anal fins. Its pectoral fins are wide and have no notches. Its pelvic fins have egg-shaped suckers. Its body is pale gray with scattered dark blue spots. It lives at depths of less than 100 meters, and mainly eats small bottom-dwelling fish and shrimp. Spawning takes place from December to February of the following year on the muddy bottom of an inland bay at a depth of 70 meters. The eggs form masses about 5 to 15 centimeters in diameter and attach to seaweed. They grow to about 45 centimeters in length.

They are caught using bottom trawls, etc. Although they are not commonly used, in winter fresh ones are mixed with grated daikon radish or simmered, and in some regions the ovaries are pickled in soy sauce.
