〘Noun〙 (ikema) A perennial climbing plant of the Asclepiadaceae family. It grows in mountainous regions throughout Japan. The roots are large and spindle-shaped. The leaves are heart-shaped, 5-15cm long and 4-10cm wide, with pointed tips, long stalks, and grow in pairs. In summer, stalks slightly longer than the petioles emerge from the leaf axils , and many small white flowers grow at the top in a scattered pattern. The fruit is a slender pod, 8-10cm long and 1cm wide, with many white pappus hairs at one end of the seeds, which are dispersed by this. The roots contain a type of alkaloid that causes brain spasms , and is used as a diuretic in traditional Chinese medicine. The Chinese name is "gyūhi jiǔ".
