[Origin] 410. Constantinople
Died in 485. A leading Athenian Neoplatonist (Athenian) philosopher. He studied under Olympiodorus in Alexandria and under Plato's successors Plutarch and Syrian in Athens, and later headed the Academy. He was an outstanding scholar, systematist, and commentator, and had a great influence on Dionysius the Areopagite. His works include Stoicheiōsis theologikē (Outline of the Theology), Peri tēs kata Platōna theologias (On Platonic Theology), and Opuscula (Pieces on Fate, Providence, and Evil), as well as commentaries on Plato's Timaeus, Parmenides, Gorgias, Phaidon, and the Republic, as well as commentaries on Hesiod.

新プラトン派 (アテネ派) の代表的哲学者。アレクサンドリアでオリンピオドロス，アテネでプラトンの後継者プルタルコスやシュリアノスに学び，のちアカデメイアを主宰した。博識，体系家，注釈家としてはきわめてすぐれた存在で，アレオパギタのディオニュシオスに多大の影響を及ぼした。著作『神学要綱』 Stoicheiōsis theologikē，『プラトン神学について』 Peri tēs kata Platōna theologias，『運命や摂理，悪についての小品集』 Opusculaなどのほかプラトンの『ティマイオス』『パルメニデス』『ゴルギアス』『ファイドン』『国家』などについての注釈，ヘシオドスの注釈などがある。
