...This is what is known as "junkumi," and when it is put together on one page, it is done by the same person. In Japanese, junkumi is used in newspapers and dictionaries as "bokumi" (continuous typography with a fixed character spacing and line spacing regardless of the page), and after the junkumi for each article or each headword is proofread several times, another person does the overall typography (also called "o-typography"). The finished typeset is called "typesetting," and is bound around the edges with binding thread (the word "typesetting" can also refer to the latter of the two tasks of selecting texts and setting, or to both tasks). ...

Until after World War II, newspapers were made by selecting type from manuscripts sent by the editorial department, composing them into 15-character lines (text selection), then following instructions from the layout department, adding lines around the edges or rearranging them into special lines (small typesetting), assembling these into a single page (large typesetting), placing a paper template on top of the paper and applying pressure from above to make a paper template (paper template making), bending the paper template into a semicircle, pouring lead alloy bullion melted to 600 degrees Celsius into it to make a lead plate (lead plate casting), and printing it on a rotary press. This is called the HTS (hot type system) or hot metal system.
