A city in southern Ontario, Canada. Population: 87,976 (1991). A settlement was established by the Scots in 1827, and it developed as a distribution center for agricultural products. In 1879, city ordinances were implemented. The Ontario Agricultural College (which became the University of Guelph in 1964) was established in 1874, and research into scientific farming methods progressed.
