Umataka ruins
This is a settlement site from the Middle Jomon period located in Nakahara, Sekihara-cho 1-chome, Nagaoka City, Niigata Prefecture. It is located on the Sekihara Hills (60-70m above sea level) on the west bank of the Shinano River, and overlooks the Mitoinaba Site from the later period on the opposite bank across a small valley. Since around 1935, local Kondo Kanjiro and his son Tosaburo have been collecting artifacts, and many are known to have been found, including stone tools such as chipped and ground stone axes, stone arrowheads, stone spoons, stone spears, stone plates, concave stones, stone clubs, and beads, as well as pottery, clay figurines, triangular clay slabs, triangular clay products, and clay pulley-shaped ear ornaments. It is particularly famous as the site where the so-called flame pottery, a unique style of pottery from the middle to mid-middle Jomon period, was first discovered, which has four large protrusions called cockscomb crests on the rim and a ridge pattern decorating the surface.
