A great collection of tales from ancient India that has been lost. The author Guṇādhya's biography and date (between the 3rd and 7th centuries) are unclear. It is said to have been composed of 100,000 verses and written in the slang language Paiśācī. It is said to have been a collection of tales based on the story of the marriage of King Udayana of the Vatsa Kingdom and the adventures of the prince Naravahanadatta. The original has been lost and no longer exists, but several Sanskrit abridged versions have been handed down. The most famous of these versions is Kathāsaritsāgara by Somadeva (11th century), which consists of 18 volumes of beautiful Sanskrit verse with 21,388 verses and contains 350 interesting stories.
