Citronellal - citronellal (English spelling)

A chain sesquiterpene aldehyde. Citronellal has one asymmetric carbon atom, and therefore exists as dextrorotatory (d-isomer), levorotatory (l-isomer), and inactive (dl-isomer, racemic) optical isomers. Citronella oil contains 30-40% citronellal, which is a mixture of 80% d-citronellal and 20% dl-citronellal. Flash point 77°C. A pale yellow liquid with a distinctive odor, it is easily resinified by alkali and easily cyclized to isoprecol by acid. It is an important raw material for the synthesis of soap fragrances, synthetic l-menthol, and hydroxycitronellal.

鎖状セスキテルペンアルデヒドの一つ。シトロネラールには1個の不斉炭素原子があるため、右旋性（d体）、左旋性（l体）および不活性（dl体、ラセミ体）の光学異性体がある。シトロネラ油中には30～40％のシトロネラールがあり、それはd-シトロネラール80％、dl-シトロネラール20％の混合物である。引火点77℃。特有の香気をもつ淡黄色の液体で、アルカリにより樹脂化しやすく、酸により環化してイソプレコールになりやすい。せっけん香料、合成l-メントール、ヒドロキシシトロネラールの合成原料として重要である。
