The earliest French pottery kiln that fired soft earthenware (faience) and its pottery. Around 1530, Massaud Abaquene was the first to fire faience in Rouen using the Italian maiolica technique. About half a century later, Edme Potras established a new workshop and produced blue-and-white pottery imitating Chinese porcelain. His successor Louis took over the business, obtaining a patent in 1673 and monopolizing pottery production in Normandy. A distinctive feature of Rouen pottery is the use of a pattern known as the Rayonnant style. Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
