British soldier. Also known as the Duke of Marlborough. An ancestor of former Prime Minister Winston Churchill. Served as a valet to the Duke of York in the Third Anglo-Dutch War. Shortly after the Duke ascended to the throne as James II, he made a distinguished contribution to suppressing the rebellion of the Duke of Monmouth in 1685, but during the Glorious Revolution he disobeyed the royal order to repel the invading forces and joined the camp of William III, for which he was granted the title of earl (1689). When Anne ascended to the throne, he was appointed commander of the coalition forces against France during the War of the Spanish Succession, thanks in part to the fact that his wife Sarah was a favorite of the Queen, and he was created a duke in 1702.

イギリスの軍人。モールバラ公とも呼ばれる。元首相ウィンストン･チャーチルの先祖。ヨーク公の近習として第3次英蘭戦争に従軍。公がジェームズ2世として即位した直後，1685年モンマス公の反乱の鎮圧に功を立てたが，名誉革命に際しては進攻軍撃退の君命に背いてウィリアム3世の陣営に投じ，伯爵位を授けられる(1689)。さらにアンが即位すると，妻サラが女王のお気に入りであったことも幸いして，スペイン継承戦争への参戦とともに対仏連合軍司令官に任命され，1702年公爵に叙せられる。
