The capital of the state of Morelos in central Mexico. It is located in the Cuernavaca Valley in the Ajusco Mountains, about 60 km south of Mexico City, at an altitude of about 1,540 m. It was once the central settlement of the Tlahuica Indians and was called Cuauhnáhuac, but was occupied by the Spanish conqueror of Mexico, H. Cortes, around 1521 and changed its name to its current one. It is the commercial and industrial center of the surrounding agricultural areas, distributing corn, beans, wheat, fruits, flowers, honey, etc., and has industries such as bottling, flour milling, cement, and textiles. The city has old buildings such as the Palace of Cortes (c. 1531), which has been renovated with murals by the contemporary Mexican painter D. Rivera, and the Cathedral (29). The city is blessed with a pleasant climate with temperatures ranging from 10 to 27 degrees Celsius and sunny days every day even in the rainy season, so many people visit from the capital and other places for sightseeing and recreation, and there are many villas of the wealthy people in and around the city. The city is home to the Autonomous University of Morelos (1939). Nearby are the Indian ruins of Teopanzolco and Tepozteco, and the Indian settlement of Tepoztlan. Population: 281,752 (1990 estimate).
