…In the 1930s, eight major film companies were formed through connections with financial capital, of which Paramount, MGM, 20th Century Fox, Warner Brothers, and RKO were known as the "Big Five," while Universal, Columbia, and United Artists were known as the "Little Three." Paramount's predecessor was Adolph Zukor's (1873-1976) Famous Players Film Company. In 1912, Zukor, who had achieved great success by importing and distributing the feature film "Queen Elizabeth," starring the famous French actress Sarah Bernhardt, to the United States, established the independent production company with the slogan "Famous Players in Famous Plays." …
