Conglomerates found directly above unconformities represent the initial sedimentary phase of a series of strata, i.e., when marine regression ends and transgression begins. Generally, as is evident from the unconformity, hard, rounded pebbles that have been well sorted by the influence of waves and currents near the coast are distributed over a wide area. The opposing term, intraformational conglomerate, is easily distinguished by the inclusion of subangular gravel derived from nearby co-sedimentary layers.
