Women's Art

Japanese: 女人芸術 - にょにんげいじゅつ
Women's Art

A literary magazine for women. From its launch in July 1928 (Showa 3) to its closure in June 1957, it published a total of 5 volumes and 48 issues. With financial support from her husband Mikami Otokichi, it was edited and written by women, including Hasegawa Shigure, Ikuta Hanayo, Motokawa Kinuko, and Hasegawa Haruko, and its target audience was also women. With former employees of Seito as brains, it aimed to discover and nurture new female writers. It serialized Hayashi Fumiko's Wanderings for 20 issues, and produced a succession of female writers, including Ueda (Enchi) Fumiko, Ota Yoko, Kubokawa (Sata) Ineko, and Otani Fujiko, but began to lean leftward as the proletarian literature movement reached its peak. It was characterized by critiques by Kamichika Ichiko and other authors, and contributions reporting on the current situation of working women. After the third ban, it ceased publication due to a lack of funds. A reprint of all 48 volumes has been published (1981, Fuji Publishing). In July and August 1923 (Taisho 12), Shigure and Okada Yachiyo published two issues of "Women's Art."
