Teleprompter - Prompter (English spelling)

A theatrical term. A person who, out of sight of the audience, teaches the actors onstage their lines and the triggers for their movements. To do this, it is necessary to be present from rehearsals and memorize the mannerisms of each actor. In Kabuki, a kyogen actor dressed in black plays this role while hiding behind the props or in the wings of the stage. In foreign theatres, many theatres have a special space in the centre of the front edge of the stage called a prompter box, with a hole cut in it, and opera theatres in particular have permanent prompter boxes. In Japan, there were prompter boxes at the Tsukiji Little Theatre and the former Haiyuza Theatre, but they were not used much.

演劇用語。観客に見えない場所で、舞台上の俳優に台詞(せりふ)や動きのきっかけを教える係をいう。そのためには稽古(けいこ)から立ち会って、各演技者の癖などを覚えておくことが必要である。歌舞伎(かぶき)では黒衣(くろご)をつけた狂言方が装置の陰や舞台の袖(そで)に隠れてこの役を務める。外国では舞台前端の中央にプロンプター・ボックスという切り穴をつくって特別な場所を設けている劇場も多く、とくにオペラ劇場には常設されている。日本では築地小劇場と旧俳優座劇場にあったが、あまり利用されなかった。
