Found in tulips, mushrooms, corn germs, shellfish, etc. It is obtained by heating ammonium thiocyanate to 180 °C, by reacting chloropicrin or ethyl orthocarbonate with ammonia, or by adding ammonia to cyanamide. Colorless, hygroscopic crystalline powder. Melting point about 50 °C. 1.25. p K a1 13.65. p K a2 -11.0 (25 °C). Easily soluble in water and ethanol. Strongly alkaline, absorbs carbon dioxide in air. Melting point of carbonate is 197 °C. At 160 °C, it releases ammonia to become melamine. Store in a tightly sealed container. A type of muscle poison that excites nerve endings and acts as a calcium antagonist. LD 50 500 mg/kg (rabbit, oral).
