A village in Yoshino County, southern Nara Prefecture. It is the largest village in Honshu, occupying the Totsugawa River basin. There is little arable land, and the farmhouses scattered across the mountainside are mainly engaged in forestry. During the Nanboku-cho period, it was the military and economic rear base of the Yoshino Court, and in the early modern period it was under the jurisdiction of the Gojo Magistrate's Office. Totsugawa samurai, said to be surviving retainers of the Southern Court, joined the Tenchu-gumi at the end of the Edo period and caused the Totsugawa Incident. It used to be a long-distance isolated village, but National Route 168 runs through it, and forestry resources and power generation development is underway as part of the Yoshino-Kumano Regional Comprehensive Development Project. In 2004, the sacred sites and pilgrimage routes in the Kii Mountain Range were registered on the World Heritage List (Omine Okugake Trail, Tamaki Shrine). 672.38 km2 . 4,107 people (2010). → Related article Okuyoshino [Power Plant] Source : Heibonsha Encyclopedia About MyPedia Information |
