Born: 1825. Lincolnshire [Died] March 10, 1895. Founder of Paris haute couture. Also known as Worth. A male dressmaker born in England. After training at a London clothier, he moved to Paris in 1846 and displayed his design talents at the famous women's clothing store of the time, Boutique Gageran. He held shows in which his wife was used as a model to wear his creations, and is known for being the first to use a live mannequin. In 1858, he opened his own couture house on the Rue de la Paix, and built the foundations of haute couture, which advocates not only following customer orders but also creativity in design. In 1860, he became the exclusive dressmaker for Eugénie, wife of Napoleon III, and was appointed by the royal family, and brought about the fashion for tailored women's clothing and sheath lines.
