Year of death: Around 20th July 1202 (9th August 1202) Year of birth: 1139 A poet of the Heian and Kamakura periods. His real name was Fujiwara no Sadanaga. He was the son of Ajari Toshikai, a monk at Daigoji Temple and the brother of Fujiwara no Shunzei. He was adopted by Shunzei around 1150, and became a monk around 1172. He participated in several poetry contests while he was still a layperson, starting with the "Taira no Tsunemori Ason Family Poetry Contest" in August 1167. After becoming a monk, he began to write poetry in earnest, composing poems with Fujiwara no Teika and others in works such as "Futamiura Hyakushu" (1186, Saigyo Kanjin) and "Inpumon'in Daifu Hyakushu" (1187), and contributing to the establishment of a new style of waka poetry. He is famous for having engaged in a fierce debate with Akiaki of the Rokujo family in the "Six Hundred Poems Contest" around 1193. He was included in the Shoji 2nd Year First One Hundred Poems (1200) and was a major poet in the Gotoba Emperor Sen'do poetry circle. In July 1201, he became a member of the newly established Wakadokoro, and was subsequently selected as a judge for the Shin Kokin Wakashū (1205). He subsequently participated in events such as the Ken'nin Gannen Sen'do Gojushu, the Santai Wakashū (1202), and the Sengohyakuban Utaawase (around 1202), but he passed away before seeing the completion of the Shin Kokin Wakashū. His family anthologies include the Jakuren Hoshishu, as well as the Mudai Hyakushu and Ketsudai Hyakushu. He has 117 poems included in imperial anthologies such as the Senzai Wakashū.
