Kuttāb (English spelling)

Japanese: クッターブ（英語表記）kuttāb

An Arabic word meaning "school." It generally refers to a primary education facility that focuses on reciting the Quran. Maktab was also used as a synonym, but the latter now often refers to an elementary school within the modern education system. In contrast, madrasas refer to higher education facilities. There are records of primary education from the very early days of Islamic history, dating back to the Jahiliya period. Traditional kuttabs were, for the most part, outside the control of political power, and were widespread enough that anyone in town or village could attend if they wanted to.

〈学校〉を意味するアラビア語。一般に，コーラン暗誦を中心とする初等教育施設をいう。マクタブmaktabも同義語として用いられたが，後者は現代では，近代教育制度の中での小学校を指すことが多い。これに対し，マドラサは高等教育施設をさす。イスラムの歴史のごく初期から初等教育に関する記録はあり，ジャーヒリーヤ時代にまでさかのぼる。伝統的なクッターブは，ほとんどの場合，政治権力の統制外にあり，町でも村でも望みさえすればだれもが通える程度に普及していた。
