Elizabethan style

A British architectural style popular during the reign of Elizabeth I (1558-1603). It is a transitional style between the Tudor and James I styles. It is still based on the vertical structure of Gothic and follows the Tudor style's turrets and windowed exterior, but shows the influence of Italian and French Renaissance styles in the detailed decoration and symmetrical façades. It developed in the field of secular architecture, mainly castles, rather than church architecture. Representative examples include Burghley House in Northamptonshire (c. 1560-80) and Hardwick Hall in Derbyshire (1591-97).

エリザベス1世の治政時代（1558～1603）に流行したイギリスの建築様式。チューダー様式とジェームス1世様式との間に挟まれた過渡的様式。依然としてゴシックの垂直構造を基本とし、チューダー様式の小塔や窓の多い外観を踏襲しながらも、細部の装飾やシンメトリーの原理の行き渡ったファサード（正面）などにイタリアおよびフランスのルネサンス様式の影響を示している。教会建築よりもむしろ城館を主とする世俗建築の分野で発展した。代表例としては、ノーサンプトンシャーのバーグレー・ハウス（1560～80ころ）やダービーシャーのハードウィック・ホール（1591～97）などがあげられる。
