[Born] King Injo 15 (1637) [Died] Sukjong 18 (1692) A Korean literary official and novelist of the Yi Dynasty. His pen name was Jungsuk. His pen name was Seop. He was born into the distinguished family of the Kim clan in Gwangsan, and served in prominent positions such as Chief Justice and Chief Professor, but he was caught up in a party strife and died of an illness in Namhae, where he was exiled. He advocated the value of Hangeul in the climate of classical Chinese worship at the time, and recognized the usefulness of novels, which were often overlooked. He wrote long Hangeul novels such as Nine Clouds Dream and Record of the Southern Expedition of the Xie Family. It is said that he wrote Nine Clouds Dream for his mother while in exile, and it depicts the Buddhist enlightenment that fame, wealth and prosperity are nothing more than a spring dream through the life of an aristocrat named Yang Shaoyou. Record of the Southern Expedition of the Xie Family is a work that illustrates the incident in which King Sukjong deposed his queen by referring to the conflict between wives and concubines in an aristocratic family. His other works include the collection of poems and prose, Seop Collection, and the collection of essays, Seop Manpitsu.
