River transport - Kasen Suiun

…However, all river ports in Japan have already disappeared. …Furthermore, water use in the midstream and below is changing from agricultural water to urban water, such as industrial water and drinking water, because the end of the river is near the metropolitan area. [Masatami Nakayama]
[History of Water Transport]
The existence of river water transportation in the Tone River basin is known from fragmentary historical documents from ancient times to the Warring States period, such as the appearance of a ship at Tsu in Saitama in the Manyoshu, a dispute over an Izu Hashiriyuyama oil supply ship at Kozaki in Shimousa during the Bun'ei era (1264-75), and the passage of river boats from Sakura to Sekijuku and from Kasai to Kurihashi in a judgment by Hojo Ujiyasu. In the early modern period, Matsudaira Ietada, who was transferred from Oshi in Bushu to Kajiro in Shimousa in 1592 (Bunroku 1), took a river boat from Oshi Shingo, passing through Yahagi and Kanaiito and arriving at the Omi River, and continuing into the ancient period.
