Kinma - Kinma

Japanese: 蒟醬 - きんま

Lacquerware with a black lacquer base and vermilion or colored lacquer applied with patterns created using the lacquering technique. Influenced by Chinese chinkin, it was made in Thailand, but since the 16th century, Myanmar has been the main producer. The base is bamboo, woven or rolled, and high-quality products use horsehair. For decoration, a double-edged sword is used to carve the pattern directly into the black lacquer base without a preliminary drawing, and then a coat of oil-containing colored lacquer is applied over the entire surface, and after drying, the colored lacquer is ground off except for the engraved lines. Finally, a thin coat of oil-mixed lacquer is applied to give it a glossy finish. In ancient Thailand, there was a custom of sprinkling lime on betel nuts, wrapping them in betel leaves, a type of vine, and chewing them together, and these materials were placed in locally produced lacquerware to entertain guests.

黒漆地に朱漆または色漆で，塡漆の技法により文様を表した漆器。中国の沈金の影響をうけてタイでつくられたが，16世紀以降はミャンマーが主産地である。素地は竹で，編胎，捲胎とし，高級品は馬毛を用いた。加飾は黒漆地に両刃の刀で，下図なしに直接文様を彫りつけ，油の入った色漆を一面に塗り，乾燥を待って刻線以外の色漆を研ぎ落とす。最後に油混和の漆を薄く塗って光沢を出す。古くタイではビンロウ(檳榔)の実に石灰をまぶし，蔓草の一種であるキンマ(蒟醬（くしよう）)の葉に包んでいっしょに嚙む習慣があり，これらの材料を地産の漆器に入れて客をもてなした。
