…The murals were discovered in 1879, along with shells, animal bones, and remains of a campfire. The discoverer, Marcelino de Sautuola, claimed that they were from the Paleolithic period, but this was not accepted by the academic community. In 1902, the Sautuola theory was confirmed by the investigation of French archaeologists Émile Cartailhac and Breuil. The murals are concentrated on the ceiling (1-2m high) of a room 18m long and 8-9m wide, located about 30m to the left of the entrance, and 25 animal figures are painted in red, black, and brown. …
