Landini, Francesco

Landini, Francesco
Born: Around 1325, Fiesole
Died September 2, 1397. Italian composer from Florence. He became blind as a child from smallpox, but studied philosophy, astrology, and music, and won first place in a poetic contest in Venice in 1364. His life is unknown, but he was known as a master of the organetto (a small portable organ). He excelled in polyphonic songs, such as 141 ballatas and 11 madrigals, and is considered one of the leading Italian composers of the 14th century. His compositions are characterized by decorative melodies and an elegant, bright style. The "Landini cadence" named after him is a cadence that is often found in his music, but it was common at the time and was not unique to him.
