1880‐1968 Italian composer. He studied composition at the Parma Conservatory and music history at the University of Parma. He wrote Music of the Greeks (1914), and created works that idealized ancient Greek art and adopted a neoclassical stance. He aimed to integrate music and words in many stage works, choruses, and songs, including music for D'Annunzio's dramatic poem The Ship, the opera Phaedra, and the opera Deborah and Jaele, which he wrote with his own libretto, and created his own style of recitation. He also left behind orchestral works, choruses, songs, and chamber music, including Three Symphonic Preludes to Oedipus Rex. Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
