〘noun〙① (adjective) (━suru) To be modest in words or actions. Also, the state of being modest. Modest state. ※Iroha Jiruishō (1177-81) “Kinjin (suspension of self-restraint, human feelings section)” ※Tosei Shosei Kajitsu (1885-86)〈Tsubouchi Shoyō) 3 “Despite his strict self-restraint nature, he never sat still for more than five days” 〔Zhuge Liang - Saishou Shihō〕② A type of punishment. Forcing someone to stay in a certain place for a certain period of time and not allowing them to go out. (a) A punishment imposed on those of samurai rank or higher during the Edo period. ※Kaei Meiji Nenroku (1869) 7 “Order to confine three families, Owari, Mito, Echizen” (b) One of the punishments used by the army and navy after the Meiji period. ※Army Punishment Order (Meiji 41) (1908), Article 5: "Officers: 1. Severe Reprimand 2. Light Reprimand" (Ha) One of the punishments given to students at schools. Preventing them from attending school. Third to expulsion, expulsion, and suspension.

〘名〙① (形動)(━する) 言葉や行ないをひかえめにすること。また、そのさま。つつしみぶかいさま。※色葉字類抄(1177‐81)「謹慎 人情部 キンジン」※当世書生気質(1885‐86)〈坪内逍遙〉三「其の謹慎(キンシン)な性質で居ながら、五日と尻がすはらないで」 〔諸葛亮‐前出師表〕② 刑罰の一種。一定期間、ある場所にいさせて外出を許さないこと。(イ) 江戸時代、士分以上の者に科せられた刑。※嘉永明治年間録(1869)七「尾張、水戸、越前、三家に謹慎を命ず」(ロ) 明治以後の陸海軍で行なわれた懲罰の一つ。※陸軍懲罰令(明治四一年)(1908)五条「将校 一、重謹慎 二、軽謹慎」(ハ) 学校などで行なう学生への処罰の一つ。登校を差し止めること。放校、退学、停学に次ぐ。
