〘名〙① (形動)(━する) 言葉や行ないをひかえめにすること。また、そのさま。つつしみぶかいさま。※色葉字類抄(1177‐81)「謹慎 人情部 キンジン」※当世書生気質(1885‐86)〈坪内逍遙〉三「其の謹慎(キンシン)な性質で居ながら、五日と尻がすはらないで」 〔諸葛亮‐前出師表〕② 刑罰の一種。一定期間、ある場所にいさせて外出を許さないこと。(イ) 江戸時代、士分以上の者に科せられた刑。※嘉永明治年間録(1869)七「尾張、水戸、越前、三家に謹慎を命ず」(ロ) 明治以後の陸海軍で行なわれた懲罰の一つ。※陸軍懲罰令(明治四一年)(1908)五条「将校 一、重謹慎 二、軽謹慎」(ハ) 学校などで行なう学生への処罰の一つ。登校を差し止めること。放校、退学、停学に次ぐ。
