Marriage between people with close kinship. This is prohibited as a taboo in most societies, but there are examples of it being practiced by royal families in ancient societies. There are two reasons for the prohibition of incestuous marriages. 1. Prohibition for eugenic reasons. The Civil Code prohibits marriage between lineal blood relatives (direct relatives) and collateral blood relatives within the third degree of kinship (Civil Code Article 734). 2. Prohibition for moral reasons. The Civil Code prohibits marriage between people who are or have been legal lineal blood relatives (such as adoptive parents and adopted children) and between people who are or have been lineal in-laws (such as bride and father-in-law) (Civil Code Articles 735 and 736). In Japan, cousins (fourth degree of kinship) can marry each other. →Incest→Related topics Blood marriage | Marriage | Relatives Source : Heibonsha Encyclopedia About MyPedia Information |
