Japanese: エソ(狗母魚) - エソ

A general term for marine fish belonging to the Synodontidae family of the order Myctophiidae. It is also written as 鱠. They generally have a flat head, a long, slender body, a large mouth with sharp teeth, and look similar to a snake or lizard. The English name lizardfish comes from this. About 34 species are known from four genera in the oceans of the world, and of these, 18 species from three genera are known to exist in the waters off Japan: the Saurida genus ( Saurida : Saurida), the Crocodile Frogfish, the Lizardfish, the Spotted Frogfish, the Trachinocephalus genus (Trachinocephalus ) , the Red Frogfish, the Sand Frogfish, the Striated Frogfish, the Oriental Frogfish, and the Butterfly Frogfish.

ハダカイワシ目エソ科Synodontidaeに属する海産魚の総称。鱠とも書く。一般に扁平な頭部，細長い体，大きな口に鋭い歯をもち，外見はヘビやトカゲに似る。英名のlizardfish(トカゲウオ)もこれに由来する。全世界の海に4属約34種が知られているが，そのうち日本近海からは，マエソ属Sauridaのマエソ，ワニエソ，トカゲエソ，マダラエソ，オキエソ属Trachinocephalusのオキエソ，アカエソ属Synodusのアカエソ，スナエソ，ホシノエソ，ハナトゴエソ，チョウチョウエソの3属18種が知られている。
