There are short breaks taken as needed during the day's work, and holidays that are appropriately distributed throughout the year. In the rural areas of Shibata City, Niigata Prefecture, when people went out to the fields and took a rest by smoking a cigarette instead of immediately starting work, this was called oriyasumi, and one break in the morning and one in the afternoon were called tabakoyasumi, nakayasumi, and one after meals was called jikiyasumi. Naps were limited to the summer, and were limited to the period between after rice planting and Hassaku (the first day of the old August), and the time was said to be after lunch, until one stick of incense burned out.

仕事休みには1日の労働の中で必要に応じてとる小時間の休憩と，1年の中に適当に配されている休日とがある。新潟県新発田市の農村部では，野良に出てもすぐに仕事にかからずに吸いつけ煙草などして休むことをオリヤスミといい，午前，午後各1回の休憩をタバコヤスミ，ナカヤスミ，食事後のをジキヤスミといっていた。昼寝は夏季期間中に限られ，それも田植過ぎから八朔(旧8月1日)までの間というように決まっており，その時間は昼食後線香1本が燃え尽きるまでの間などといわれていた。
