Furthermore, Tolstoy's true character was exposed in stark detail by his disciple Vladimir G. Chertkov (1854-1936) who exposed Tolstoy's family tragedy (Tolstoy in His Later Years, translated by Sugaku Bunsho, 1926) and the publication of Tolstoy's diary from 1935 (Showa 10) to 1937. The publication of the diary sparked a debate between Masamune Hakucho and Kobayashi Hideo on "Thoughts and Real Life," but from this time on the pretentious atmosphere of Tolstoy worship began to cool.
