Light is always absorbed to a certain extent when it passes through a material, but this refers to cases where the degree of absorption is small. [Additional note] The earliest written description was "Lily (yuri) <abbreviated> transparent (skashi) lily" in the Wakan Sansai Zue ( 1713 ).

〘名〙 (形動)① (━する) すきとおってにごりがないこと。すきとおって見えること。また、そのさま。※解体新書（1774）二「水晶液。甚透明而似_二仮水精経_レ磨者_一」※古寺巡礼（1919）〈和辻哲郎〉四六「透明な愛着のこころでその顔を見まもった」〔物理小識〕② 物体が光をよく通すこと。光は物質中を通るとき常にある程度吸収されるが、その程度の小さい場合をいう。[補注]表記としては「和漢三才図会」（一七一三）に「百合(ゆり)〈略〉透明(スカシ)百合」などとみえるのが早い。
