A compound in which some of the elements that make up the compound have been replaced with their radioactive or stable isotopes. Using isotopes as tracers is widely used to clarify reaction mechanisms, measure isotope effects, and perform quantitative analysis (isotope dilution method). They are sometimes called to distinguish them from organically labeled compounds or inorganically labeled compounds; the former includes many organic compounds such as 14 CH 3 OH labeled with 14 C, and the latter includes Na 2 35 SO 3 .
