Goto Juan

Japanese: 後藤寿庵 - ごとうじゅあん
Goto Juan

Date of birth and death unknown. Oshu Christian in the early Edo period. He was the third son of Iwabuchi Omi no Kami Hidenobu, the lord of the castle in Fujisawa, Higashiiwai County, Mutsu Province (Ichinoseki City, Iwate Prefecture), and his childhood name was Matagoro. When the main family was destroyed by Toyotomi Hideyoshi, he went to Goto in Nagasaki, where he was baptized and called Goto Joan (Juan). On the recommendation of Tanaka Shosuke, who had traveled to Mexico, he became a vassal of Date Masamune in 1611 (Keicho 16), and was given 1,200 koku of land in Fukuhara, Miwakemori, Mizusawa Town, Isawa County (Miwakemori, Mizusawa Ward, Oshu City). He played an active role as a central figure in the Oshu Christian movement, and despite Masamune's order to renounce his faith, he continued to keep his faith. He was exiled from the end of 1623 (Genwa 9) to the beginning of 1624 (Kan'ei 1) and fled to the Nanbu Domain, and his whereabouts after that are unknown. Today, the "Juan Weir," which was built to divert water from the Isawa River, remains in Fukuhara.
