Kalokagathia (English spelling)

Japanese: カロカガティア（英語表記）kalokagathia

From the Greek words kalos (beauty), kai (and), and agathos (goodness). In the Pythagorean school, which valued harmony, good and beauty were seen as two aspects of the same thing in principle, and this was passed down to the Greek view of education, which considered the realization of good and beauty through the harmonious development of the mind and body to be the ideal of human perfection. By Socrates and Plato, both good and beauty were considered to have their original meaning in the spiritual, and "good and beauty" was elevated to the meaning of moral perfection that encompasses both good and beauty. This idea was later passed down to Shaftesbury, Schiller, and others.

ギリシア語の，「美」 kalosにして，「かつ」 kai，「善」 agathosなること。「調和」を重んじたピタゴラス学派において，善と美とは原理的に同一のものの2相ととらえられ，心身の調和的発達による善美の実現こそ，人間完成の理想とするギリシアの教育観へ受継がれた。ソクラテス，プラトンにいたって，善と美はともに精神的なものにおいて本来の意義を有するとされ，「善美」は善に美を包含する道徳的完成の意味へと高められた。この思想は，のちのシャフツベリ，シラーらへ受継がれる。
