...Population: 254,000 (1995). Located on the southwest foot of the Pennines, on the banks of the River Stoke, with coal and clay from the North Stafford coalfield as its backdrop, the city is home to a number of pottery factories, including Wedgwood, and also produces bricks, tiles, steel, and tires. It was formed in 1910 by the merger of six towns and villages, all of which were long-established pottery centres: Stoke-upon-Trent, Hanley, Burslem, Tunstall, Longton, and Fenton.
