Igaito

...The word "Kakiuchi" appears in documents from the early Heian period onwards as a place name for a specific private land parcel. Most of these were fields, bordered by fences, fences, roads, banks, ditches, and rivers, and bordered other territories and other kakiuchi. Some were residential land (igaito), but they were usually subject to sale and transfer as private fields. At the same time, the inside and outside of the kakiuchi were opened up to rice fields, and kakiuchi rice fields and monden rice fields (kadota), which encompassed them, began to appear widely, creating a medieval rural landscape in which enclosed cultivated land, open cultivated land, and wasteland were mixed together around the kakiuchi settlement.
