Bandits in Sertão, an arid region in northeastern Brazil. The residents of Sertão, which is unfavorable in natural conditions and suffers from drought once every ten years, have little ability to own land due to the large land ownership system and have led poor lives. As a result, cangaceiros emerged from among them, attacking shops, wealthy people, large farms, and traveling merchants in rural towns. Working alone or in groups, they committed robbery, arson, and murder. The residents believed that it was their right to remove the injustices that had been inflicted on them themselves, and instead viewed the law and the police as enemies.
