Appianus

German mathematician and cosmographer. His real name was Peter Bienewitz, and Appianus was his Latin name. He was born in Leisnig, Saxony, and studied mathematics at the University of Leipzig. He wrote many maps, mathematical books, and cosmographies, and created astronomical instruments. His Cosmographicus liber (1524), published in Landshut, went through nearly 60 editions by 1609, and is considered to be one of the most representative cosmographies before the Copernican theory, along with that by S. Münster.

ドイツの数学者，宇宙誌家。本名Peter Bienewitz，アピアヌスはラテン名。ザクセンのライスニヒで生まれ，ライプチヒ大学で数学を学ぶ。多くの地図，数学書，宇宙誌を著し，天文観測器具を作製したが，ランツフートで刊行された《宇宙誌Cosmographicus liber》(1524)は，1609年にいたるまでほぼ60版を重ね，S.ミュンスターのそれと並びコペルニクス説以前の代表的な宇宙誌とされた。
