1495‐1552 German mathematician and cosmographer. His real name was Peter Bienewitz, and Appianus was his Latin name. He was born in Leisnig, Saxony, and studied mathematics at the University of Leipzig. He wrote many maps, mathematical books, and cosmographies, and created astronomical instruments. His Cosmographicus liber (1524), published in Landshut, went through nearly 60 editions by 1609, and is considered to be one of the most representative cosmographies before the Copernican theory, along with that by S.
