Apia - Apia (English spelling)

It is the capital of Samoa (formerly Western Samoa) in the southwest Pacific. It is located on the north coast of Upolu Island in the Samoan archipelago. It has a good port, and the copra and bananas produced on the island are mainly exported to New Zealand. It has a population of 35,900 (estimated in 2003). Faleolo Airport is 34 km west, and there are regular flights to Auckland, New Zealand, and Suva, Fiji, but from Tokyo and Honolulu, you must transfer at Pago Pago in American Samoa. It is a tourist destination blessed with beautiful scenery, and is home to a Christian missionary school built in the 1850s, and the grave of Stevenson, author of Treasure Island, who died here in 1894.

南西太平洋、サモア（旧西サモア）の首都。サモア諸島、ウポル島北岸にある。良港であって、島で産するコプラ、バナナは主としてニュージーランドへ輸出される。人口3万5900（2003推計）。西方34キロメートルにファレオロFaleoro空港があり、ニュージーランドのオークランド、フィジーのスバと定期便があるが、東京やホノルルからはアメリカ領サモアのパゴパゴで乗り換える。風光に恵まれた観光地で、1850年代に建てられたキリスト教伝道学校や、1894年に当地で没した『宝島』の著者スティーブンソンの墓がある。
