Japanese: 我孫子[市] - あびこ
Abiko [city] - Abiko
A city in northwestern Chiba Prefecture. It was incorporated as a city in 1970. It occupies the lowlands and plateau between the Tone River and Lake Teganuma, and its main settlement developed as a post station on the Rikuzenhama Kaido road. In the early modern period, Fusa on the eastern end of the city prospered as a market for fresh fish brought in from Choshi. As it is a junction between the Joban Line and the Narita Line and is within 30 km of the city center, housing development on the plateau has progressed and there are many people commuting to Tokyo. The development of an industrial park is underway, and factories producing electrical equipment and other products are located there. The city suffered damage in the Great East Japan Earthquake. 43.15 km2 . 134,017 people (2010).
