Nazi German architect and politician. The greatest architect of the Third Reich. Born in Mannheim. He was responsible for the huge architectural plan for the Nuremberg Party Congress (1934), and Zeppelinplatz is considered his representative work along with the Reich Chancellery (1939). Hitler had been working on plans to remodel German cities since 1936, and had appointed famous architects to major cities. In 1937, he appointed Speer as the architectural director for the Berlin Remodeling Plan, and this plan, which was later described as "building ruins before ruins," was immediately put into action. In 1942, following the death of Fritz Todt, who led the munitions organization known as the Todt Agency, he was appointed Minister of Munitions, and played a key role in promoting wartime industry. He was skilled in cleverly relocating factories to maintain military production amid the fierce bombing raids by the Allied forces. He was sentenced to 20 years in prison at the Nuremberg Trials. While in prison he wrote a memoir (published in 1969) in which he analyzed the inner workings of the Nazis.

ナチス・ドイツの建築家，政治家。第三帝国時代の最大の建築家。マンハイム生れ。ニュルンベルクの党大会会場(1934年)の膨大な建築計画を担当，ツェッペリン広場は，総統官邸(1939年)などとともに彼の代表的な建築とされる。ヒトラーは1936年以来ドイツ各都市の改造計画に着手，主要な都市には著名な建築家をあてたが，1937年，ベルリン大改造計画の建築総監にシュペアーを任命，後に〈廃墟の前に廃墟を作った〉と評されるこの計画は直ちに実行に移された。1942年，トート機関と呼ばれる軍需機関を率いたトートFritz Todt の死去にともない軍需相に任命され，戦時産業の推進者的役割を果たす。連合国軍の猛烈な空爆下で軍需生産を維持するための巧妙な工場移転などに辣腕をふるった。ニュルンベルク裁判で禁錮20年の刑。服役中に回想録を執筆(1969年刊)，ナチスの内幕を分析した。
