Official German Vocabulary - Kanban Doitsutangohen

[Learning German in Japan]
The serious study of German in Japan began in July 1860 (Man'en 1), when Ichikawa Itsuki of the Foreign Books Investigation Office received an official order to study German studies when the Prussian Oriental Expeditionary Fleet arrived, and began to study German. In 1862 (Bunkyu 2), a German department was established at the Foreign Books Investigation Office, and in the same year, Japan's first German reader, the Official Edition of German Vocabulary, was published. In the Meiji period, the publication of various German-Japanese dictionaries and introductory books, including the German-Japanese Pocket Dictionary (1872), built the foundation for the acceptance of German culture and modern science, and German culture came to have a major impact on various fields in Japan.
