Azef, Evno Fishelevich

[Born] 1869
[Died] 1918. Berlin. Spy for the Russian secret police. He had been a police spy since 1892, and participated in the founding of the Socialist Revolutionary Party (SR) in 1901. In 1903, he became the de facto leader of the party's combat group. He directed a series of terrorist attacks, including the assassination of V. K. Plebe in 1904 and Grand Duke Sergei in 1905. Meanwhile, he also sold out the delegates to the SR's congress in Kharkov in 1901 and most of the members of the combat group in 1905 to the police. In 1908, his true identity was revealed, and the SR's Central Committee sentenced him to death, but he went into hiding and escaped. In 1915, during World War I, he was arrested as a spy in Germany.
