A powerful branch of the Pashtun people of Afghanistan. The Khalaj, a Turkic Karluk tribe from Central Asia, moved south and were nomadic in parts of what is now Afghanistan by the mid-10th century. Their descendants were the Ghilzai. A branch of them entered India and established the Khalji dynasty (1290-1320) in Delhi. In 1722, Mir Mahmūd (1699-1725), son of Mir Wais, chieftain of the Hotaki tribe of the Ghilzai, captured the Safavid capital of Isfahan.
