In Buddhism, this funeral method is also called dabi, which is a transliteration of the Pali word jhāpeti (dhyāpeti). Generally, there are four types of funeral methods for the dead: burial in the ground, burial at sea, cremation, and sky burial. Cremation, an ancient Aryan custom, was introduced to Japan along with Buddhism, and brought about major changes to Japanese funeral methods, which had originally been abandonment of the body or sky burial or burial in the ground.
