Japanese: ミツスイ(蜜吸) - ミツスイ（英語表記）honeyeater

A general term for birds of the family Meliphagidae (honeyeaters) of the order Passeriformes. This family consists of 39 genera and about 170 species of small to medium-sized birds. Overall length is 10-43 cm. Their plumage is generally a blended green, gray-brown, or olive brown, and the sexes are usually the same color. However, in the Myzomela genus, the sexes are somewhat different in color, with males having bright red feathers on their head, neck, and lower back. Some species with blended plumage also have well-developed ornamental feathers, wattles, and a helmet-like protrusion on the forehead.

スズメ目ミツスイ科Meliphagidaeの鳥の総称。この科には39属約170種の小型ないし中型の鳥が属している。全長10～43cm。羽色は一般にじみな緑色，灰褐色，オリーブ褐色などのものが多く，雌雄はふつう同色である。しかし，ミツスイ属Myzomelaでは雌雄は多少とも異色で，雄は頭頸（とうけい）部や腰に鮮やかな赤色の羽毛がある。また，羽色はじみでも，飾羽，肉垂（にくだれ），額のかぶと状突起などが発達している種もある。
